there’s a mnemonic for everything

March 16, 2010

Tonight, in our first smallsword class, Mike Chin gave us some pointers on remembering hand-orientation terminology:

  • Dribble a basketball like a pro. Your palm is down, so you’re pronated.
  • Hold a bowl of soup. Your palm is up, so you’re supinated.

A lot of teachers are fond of adding that palm-sideways is “goofination, so don’t do it,” but Mike pointed out that it’s actually called “half pronation” and is valid in saber, so there. He also provided some less helpful definitions:

  • disengagement: not when you call it off and return the presents
  • coupé: not where Canadians keep their chickens
